Cotabato City is a coastal independent component city in the SOCCSKSARGEN region. Although administratively independent due to its distinction as independent component city, Cotabato City is commonly grouped with the province of Maguindanao. The city serves as the regional center of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The city has a land area of 176.00 square kilometers or 67.95 square miles. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 325,079. This represented 6.63% of the total population of the SOCCSKSARGEN region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 1,847 inhabitants per square kilometer or 4,784 inhabitants per square mile.
On December 15, 2020, Cotabato City was officially transferred to the jurisdiction of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), after majority of its residents voted to be included in the region during the 2019 Bangsamoro autonomy plebiscite.
