Ampatuan is a landlocked municipality in the province of Maguindanao del Sur, which was created from the once-unpartitioned province of Maguindanao.
The municipality has a land area of 255.40 square kilometers or 98.61 square miles which constitutes 2.56% of Maguindanao's total area. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 28,941. This represented 2.16% of the total population of Maguindanao province, or 0.66% of the overall population of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
